BMW has arrived in Frankfurt with the production version of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. Positioned as the flagship model of BMW’s eco-friendly i sub-brand, the i8 packs 362 horsepower, returns 94 mpg in European efficiency testing and carries a $135,700 starting price.

Rated at a combined 362 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque, the plug-in hybrid drivetrain propels the i8 from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph. Alternatively, the i8 can operate on electricity alone for up to 22 miles at speeds of up to 75 mph thanks to a liquid-cooled 5-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the floor. Recharging takes 3.5 hours with a 110-volt outlet or just 1.5 hours with a higher-voltage BMW charging station.
